As a documentary-style wedding photographer, I often find myself in some of the most incredible places with amazing people who want a day that reflects their love as authentically as possible. This recent intimate wedding in Bethel, Maine, was one of those moments, a day that felt less posed and more like a glimpse into a private day amongst Francia and Markus and their closest family.
Bethel, Maine, is like something out of a storybook, especially in autumn. The mountain views, the crisp air, and the sense of timelessness make it a location that feels far removed from the daily rush. As the couple prepared to exchange vows, you could see how the mountain landscape played a major role in their vision. The mountains weren’t just a backdrop; they were the setting for their love story, grounding and timeless, a coincidental reflection of their high school romance turned into marriage.
This couple was all about capturing their day in a way that felt true to their style. Inspired by vintage film, we decided to integrate analog film throughout the day, which added warmth and character to every shot. There’s something about film that digital can’t replicate—the grain, the tones, and even the imperfections that make every frame feel like a piece of art.
Having their German Shepherd with them throughout the day was a testament to their laid-back and deeply connected style. He trotted by their side during their vows, sat quietly during the couple’s dinner, and even managed to find his way into many of the shots. His presence brought a sense of family to the wedding and added a layer of comfort to the couple, reminding them of home and the life they were building together.
As the day unfolded, I found myself focusing on capturing his relationship with the couple, a kind of loyalty and love that mirrored their own. Some of my favorite photos from that day are the ones with him in them—standing guard, eyes full of adoration, as if he knew how important this day was.
For couples who are drawn to nature, Bethel, Maine, is a dream wedding destination. The mountain views provide an awe-inspiring backdrop that doesn’t require extra decoration, and the secluded beauty of the area lets couples focus on what really matters. It’s not a place that demands attention—it invites peace, connection, and, in this case, a bond shared by two people (and their loyal dog) that feels as endless as the mountain range itself.
This Bethel wedding reminded me of why I love being a photographer. The mountains, the crisp Maine air, the loyal German Shepherd by their side, and the documentary style we embraced created an unforgettable experience. It wasn’t about making every shot perfect; it was about capturing real memories and real love, framed by the beauty of nature.
As the sun dipped behind the mountains, casting a golden glow over the landscape, Francia and Markus stood hand in hand on a quiet overlook to share their vows before dinner. It was a deeply personal moment, with only the sounds of nature and the gentle rustling of their German Shepherd by their side. Their words were raw and unguarded, reflecting a love that had been nurtured over years and countless shared adventures. After exchanging vows, they joined their small gathering on a deck that opened up to the vast mountain views, where an intimate dinner awaited. The scene was breathtakingly simple yet magical, with ambient candlelight casting a warm glow on the faces of their closest family and friends. The candlelight flickered as they laughed and toasted to new beginnings, the mountains standing quietly in the distance, witnessing the start of a new chapter for Francia and Markus.
I left that day with a full heart and a camera full of moments that could never be replicated. They were authentic, unscripted, and timeless—just like Bethel, Maine, and just like the love story that unfolded throughout their day. The evening capped off with a kiss beneath a sparkler exit, which was filled with background noise of laughter and cheers from their closest family and friends, as well as their trusty photographer! Cheers Francia + Markus!!
